It's no secret that I am in love with Mark Lanegan's voice - I have phases with artists like Lanegan, Tom Waits and Nick Cave with their respective smoky voices and dark lyrics where all I want to listen to is that one artist and nothing or no one else will suffice. Lately, I am very much in a Lanegan phase and so I thought I'd make a music post themed around him as it feels like a long time since I've made one. Even if you've not listened to much of this man, it's definitely worth giving these a try. Dark music for a dark January, what could be more fitting?
The Gutter Twins - All Misery / Flowers
I love this haunting, mesmorising song and the way Lanegan's voice harmonises with Dulli's. It builds hypnotically and creates an incredible atmosphere. The entire Gutter Twins Saturnalia album is amazing and certainly worth buying.
Soulsavers - Paper Money
Here we have another of Lanegan's projects, Soulsavers, who I've posted about before. There's something very gritty and sexual about this song.
Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - Revolver
A juxtaposition of a soft female voice and a smoky male voice is really irresistible to me. All three of the albums Campbell and Lanegan have made together are stunning, and Revolver is, typically, a favourite of mine as it's one of the darker sounding songs.
Soulsavers - Tonight
After I ran out of Soulsavers albums that Mark Lanegan had featured on, the next step was to listen to the newest one that features Dave Gahan, who is better known for being Depeche Mode's frontman. I was so pleasantly surprised that I loved this album, though in retrospect I shouldn't have been - Soulsavers songs are always beautifully melodic, thoughtful and slightly on the dark side which is just my cup of tea. This album is a treat and works beautifully as a whole - it's hard to pick an individual song that I love most.
Queens of the Stone Age - Hangin' Tree
I'm a huge fan of Queens of the Stone Age and Josh Homme, but I love Mark Lanegan's guest vocals on this song. Their voices sound amazing together and these artists know how to create an atmosphere.
Mark Lanegan Band - Ode To Sad Disco
The melody. The electronic-sounding undertones. His voice improves with age like a fine wine... this is surely my favourite from this, newest album.
Queens of the Stone Age - This Lullaby
Give me a creepy ballad and you can almost guarantee I will love it. This opener to QOTSA's Lullabies to Paralyze (one of my favourite albums, ever) is no exception.
Mark Lanegan - Where Did You Sleep Last Night
An amazing cover of an amazing song. This is one that gets in your head and you can't get it out. You are welcome...

I could go on and on, but I have to stop somewhere! Let me know if you like these songs or if you're also in love with a bit of Lanegan like I am...
